With the 2021/22 ski season underway, many are gearing up for a holiday on the slopes. Or, you may even be thinking of buying your own ski home to enjoy the mountains at any time of year. Jana Korpova-Harris of The Luxury Property Collections takes us through some of the best places in the world for ski lovers.
Worried about buying a ski chalet only to experience poor snowfall? Warth has a reputation for being the ‘snowiest ski area in the Alps’. It is the northernmost ski area in the Arlberg ski region.
A smaller, north-facing resort, it offers plenty of runs for intermediate skiers as well as brilliant off-piste skiing due to the steady supply of fresh powder.
A ski lift now connects Warth to the busier resort of Lech, so there is a wide variety of slopes for all abilities.
The village itself has a small range of shops and some mid-sized hotels.
Other winter sports are on offer, including winter walking, cross-country skiing, dog sledging, snowshoeing and tobogganing.
Warth is a 3-hour bus ride from Stuttgart Airport, or you can fly into Munich and get the train.
Tignes is open for around eight months of the year thanks to the Grande Motte glacier, which includes 20km of pistes that are open during the summer months, as well as a snow park. However, expect to be an early riser if you want to catch the best of the snow! The glacier closes at 1pm, so make sure to fit in a couple of hours of skiing before then.
If you’re still feeling energetic in the afternoon, Tignes offers a variety of brilliant water sports, such as white-water rafting, canyoning and kayaking.
There is also a bike park and other sports on offer, such as tennis and archery. If you’d prefer to relax, the variety of bars and restaurants has you covered.

Courmayeur is a resort that embraces food like no other, with eating considered an activity of importance, only secondary to the skiing itself.
As well as offering a host of authentic Italian restaurants and regional cuisine, there are a variety of food-related events that take place throughout the year.
These include the Momentum Ski Mountain Gourmet Ski Experience, now in its seventh year, which takes place in Courmayeur each March, the Taste of Courmayeur festival in January and the Festival of Alpine Bread in December.
For a brilliant ski school catering to all ages and abilities, a pedestrianised town with a playground and easy to navigate mountains, there’s no better place than Breckenridge for a family ski holiday.
Walk down Main Street to find a host of family-friendly restaurants or stop off at one of the slope-side diners for a tasty burger and a juice.
As a town that’s rich in history, there are also plenty of free museums to enjoy, as well as gold and silver mine tours. Breckenridge is just a 2-hour drive from Denver airport.
When most people think of a luxury ski resort, they think of Verbier. Just a two-hour drive from Geneva with a buzzing and varied après ski scene, there’s plenty to do here at any time of year.
Visit one of several Michelin Starred restaurants, visit high-end fashion outlets and relax in the hot springs.
For adrenaline seekers, paragliding, climbing and sky diving are popular in the summer months. There’s also plenty of opportunities for biking and hiking. For those who wish to relax, there’s no shortage of spas for a place to unwind.
