Material Properties

Blade - AL 5052 (strain hardened), powder coated - This type of alumimium is light yet rigid and, therefore, Ortovox first choice for many of the Ortovox shovel scoops.
Handle - AL 6061 T6 (hardened) -The Strongest aluminium available – used in Ortovox high-end safety products for optimal balance between weight and rigidity.

This POCKET SPIKE is a Top piece of kit for ski mountaineers or free hill walkers who walk up steep terrains. The EMERGENCY AXE can be quickly attached in two simple steps to the metal-reinforced PRO ALU III shovel handle in dangerous or challenging situations.

The POCKET SPIKE consists of two parts. The sharp forged axe head is made of hardened AL 7075 T6, and the shaft spike is made of AL 6061 T6, which attaches to the shovel's shaft.

The two parts can be folded together with no sharp edges for stowing in the carrying bag and weigh just 95 grams altogether. This tool is ideally suited to all tours where a little additional support is needed over the last few meters.
