So its come to that time of year where your product researching, upgrading old kit or simply lost and dont know where to start with avalanche probe shopping.
Snowsafe breakdown everything you need to know in this Ortovox Avalanche Probes Material Glossary:
All different brands offer different Avalanche Probe materials, Ortovox focus on three different materials for there probe fleet, Carbon, Steel and Aluminium, Find out more:
Carbon Ortovox premium probes 240 Superlight and 280+ PFA are made of carbon. The material is extremely stiff, yet very light. Another advantage is the low thermal conductivity of the material. The probe is more resistant to freezing.
|
Steel Steel is extremely ridig and sturdy. When weight is not a factor, but reliability and probing accuracy play a role, steel is first choice! The Ortovox Steel 320+ PFA probe is the only probe made out of steel. |
7075 Aluminium T6 Light and stiff and thus the aluminum of Ortovox’s choice for all aluminum probes. Ortovox use different tube diameters between 11 and 13 mm – meaning: the thicker the diameter, the heavier and stiffer the probe, you can find this material in the Alu 240 Light, Alu 240 PFA, Alu 320+ PFA and Alu 240 Probe.
|
All different brands also offer there own unique locking systems, market leaders Ortovox have developed two systems to make probe assmebling easier and quicker in an emergency.
PFA Assembly System “Patented Flash Assembly” for reliable assembly that’s quick as a flash. With over 100,000 PFA probes sold, the system has established itself in every area of application in the last 10 years. Ortovox have optimised the finer details for even quicker and more efficient handling: The quick-assembly strap, which is attached to the outside of the probe cover, makes immediate opening and assembly possible in one motion, you can find the PFA assemly system in the Carbon 280+ PFA, Alu 240 PFA, Alu 320+ PFA and Steel 320+ PFA. The PFA system also ensures it locks into place smoothly. |
Quick Lock Ortovox new quick-lock assembly system, assembly and locking is possible in a single direction. By pulling, the knot snaps directly into the system and the probe is assembled! The screw systems makes fine, perfect adjustments possible. You can find this quick lock knot system in the Carbon 240 Superlight, Alu 240 Light and Alu 240 avalanche probe. |
Probe tensioning can be very similar across all diffrent brands, either steel, cord fibres or kavalar, find out what Ortovox use:
Steel Cable Pull Line Ortovox most reliable pull line system. For little extra weight, you get maximum safety. This steel cable pull line tensioning system, can be found in most Ortovox probes such as the Carbon 280+ PFA, Alu 240 PFA, Alu 320+ PFA and Steel 320+ PFA probe. |
Aramid The aluminium/carbon probe segments are held together by an accessory cord made of a aramid. Aramid fibres proving high ridgity, robustness and stability with limited stretching, making them ideal for a tension system. You can find the aramid cord in the Carbon 240 Superlight, Alu 240 Light, Alu 240 Probe. |
