“Im skiiing on piste, Why do i need safety equipment like RECCO” is a very common phrase used. Avalanches do happen on piste, marked runs:
December 2019 – Val Senales in Italy, a large avalanche on a piste caused the death of a mother and her 7 year old daughter and 7 year old friend.
On Boxing Day 2019, 6 skiers were caught in an Avalanche on a Piste in Andermatt in Switzerland .
Half Term 2019 – Crans Montana Switzerland, on 20 February 2019 a man died being caught in an avalanche on a marked piste and three people were injured .
March 2017 – Tignes , France – a large avalanche buried skiers on the Carline Piste in Tignes in the morning , fortunately no one was hurt.
So it happens, not just off-piste or within the backcountry but deadly avalanches can occur on the blue and red runs on piste.
OK its unlikely and less likely than being off piste but it does happen. It makes it more and more imperative that you take precaution. Check the Avalanche risk report at the resort.
Be searchable to mountain rescue teams world wide in time for half term. Snowsafe sell RECCO Reflectors for 25 pounds, a small thing that could make a big difference. If you back country skiing it is important that the whole group is always equipped and trained with Transceiver, Shovel and Probe.
We are reaching out to all Schools, Ski Clubs and Families with a 20% discount, use coupon code SCHOOL20 at the checkout. We feel strongly that to keep children safe on the slopes a Recco reflector is essential for children on Ski School Trips at Half term.
